There are two different pages for the AKS on Facebook. One is the AKS page and the other is the group page. Thanks to Mitch Dennison for his help in making this happen. Hope to see you there.

Sounds like things at this tournament haven't changed. It also sounds like some unfair competing practices were taking place. Probably a reason why the number of competitors was low. Congratulations to your green belt Dave.

 AKS is on Facebook
« Result #4 on Oct 22, 2009, 9:20pm »

If you want to correspond with other AKS members, a number of them can be found at the AKS Facebook site. I just recently registered and am still learning the site but it seems to be the place to be.

 October Tournament
« Result #5 on Oct 22, 2009, 11:11am »

Recently, I accompanied one of my green belt students to an out of town karate tournament. I have chosen not to identify to the tournament or the sponsoring school because of some the curious events that took place.

Historically, AKS instructors and students have not done well at this particular event. AKS competitors that often place somewhere in the top three places in other tournaments often are scored near or at the bottom here. I can testify to that from personal experience. But with the limited number of available tournaments in our area, so we decided to try again.

At the rules meeting, the tournament director explained that you had to compete at the highest rank you held. With the plethora of cross training, students will often hold rank in more than style. Seemed like a fair rule.

The Black Belt weapons went first, there were three competitors. I thought the best competitor won.

After that was completed, they opened up a square for student rank weapons, which my student was competing in. The first student did her form, then they stopped all competition to watch Black Belt empty hand forms. This kind of screwed up the scoring flow, but my guy placed.

Then they called for adult yellow/green belt forms and one of the guys that competed in Black Belt weapons lines up wearing a yellow belt! I asked the judges what was going on, they conferred with director and he was allowed to compete as a yellow belt. I was not informed of the logic of their decision.

Then, when it was time to spar the same guy is now competing in men's hvywgt yellow/green belt sparring. I didn't challenge this one as the precedent had been set. I did tell my guy to make sure he let his competitor know who he was.

Mr. Lieb would have proud of the groin shot that Black Belt/Yellow Belt caught. I am sure by his next tournament he will invest in a cup. He could have used one that day.

All things considered my guy did great, he took home one trophy. I do know he would like to compete against this fellow who has the privilege of crossing ranks. We are working hard to be ready for next time.

Hope he buys a cup.

The American Karate System was well represented at the 10th Annual Martial Arts Masters Hall of Fame banquet in Long Beach. Ca. Attending were Mike Sullenger, AKS Chief Instructor, Fred Reinecke, Asst Chief Instructor, Dave Thomas, Asst Chief Instructor, Stephen Thurkettle, 6th Dan and Robert Essenberg, 3rd Dan.

It was an evening that recognized many of the best Martial Arts has to offer. There were a number of contemporary legends as well as outstanding Instructors of many styles in attendance.

Mr. Essenberg was awarded Instructor of the Year not only for his accomplishments as a visually impaired Black Belt; but for all the seminars and clinics he has set up and run for visually impaired children and adults throughout Michigan.

Mr. Lieb, our Founder and First Chief Instructor, was awarded the Platinum Life Achievement Award and was inducted into the 2009 Masters Hall of Fame. Mike Sullenger accepted the award in Mr. Lieb's behalf. Mr. Lieb was the first member of the Hall of Fame to be inducted posthumously.

In addition to the litany of martial arts masters, we were fortunate to have the actor, Mr Bo Svensen sit at our table for the evening. He is a charming and brilliantly funny man. He was honored for his many years of study in Judo and Ju Jitsu.

We all had a terrific time and met a number of fellow practitioners. You can read more in the Sept. issue of the Punchline.

New AKS Club in Grand Haven
« Result #8 on Jul 15, 2009, 1:24pm »

Starting in September there will be a new AKS karate club at the Grand Haven, Mi. YMCA. The new program willl offer separate youth and adult classes for both beginners and advanced students. The classes will run on eight week sessions.

The YMCA is a beautiful facility overlooking the water. It is replete with exercise areas, indoor pool and an extensive variety of training equipment. I am very pleased that the management of the "Y" selected us to be part of their program.

 Martial Arts Hall of Fame
« Result #9 on Jun 10, 2009, 7:37am »

On August 8, 2009 two American Karate Instructors will be honored at a banquet in Long Beach Ca.

Mr. Ernest Lieb, our Founder and First Chief Instructor, will be inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame. He will recognized for his many contributions to the growth of karate in America. It is my understanding that he will be the first recipient in his category honored posthumously.

Mr. Robert Essenberg, AKS 3rd Dan, will be honored as an Instructor of the Year. Bob has earned his rank even though his is visually handicapped. He has also taught a number of karate seminars throughout Michigan to their blind children and adults.

Our congratulations to both of these gentlemen.
