Hi all. I am a 5th green in AKS and plan to obtain the rank of 3rd Brown before summer camp this year. With Kyoshi Marquez coming I am especially working hard toward this.
My question is this. At 3rd brown I need to pick a weapon to train in. What is the best beginner weapon to choose? Also what is the most practical weapon or weapons to train in? Just curious as to what everyone thinks.

The weapon that we teach first to all of our students is the Bo. I believe it is one of better weapons to begin with. it is the easiest one to become comfortable with. Feeling comfortable with your weapon is a huge part of being able to do a form with the power and energy that is required. Plus Bo Form 1 is a requirement for either brown belt or black belt testing according to the new requirement book I believe, so you have to know it anyway.
Hope this helps. Dave

When our Black Belts teach weapons we always start with the bo, for a litany of reasons. First it is basic and the most practical. Three bad guys in Colorado learned the hard way that you don't bring a knife to a stick fight. The guy with the stick was an AKS Brown belt at the time. But that is a story for another time. Typically the next weapon of choice is the nunchuks. They combine speed with power and cause a lot of bruises in the early stages of training. Only carry them with your training gear, they are illegal in most states other than for martial arts training. After that it really is up to the student and his instructor(s), usually we start with the sai or tonfa. But I know at the AKS school in Oklahoma they teach sword forms as well as other traditional weapons. Good luck with your training and hope to see you at summer camp. Dave Thomas 7th Dan
