Hi Ingrid,
My only suggestion to you, regarding your attempts to find data on karate associations and so forth, would be to contact the publishing companies of the major martial arts magazines. Rainbow publications publishes several of them. I believe they may have been the first with Black Belt Magazine. Apart from that I don't know where else you might try looking. Here again is an example of the problem we have with accountability and ligitimacy in the US.

Sadly, I must agree with you. Karate/Martial Arts groups, schools, styles, organizations, etc. - are far to fragmented in our country. I wish we weren't. I'd really love to see things here more organized. I don't hold any hopes for that to happen in this country unless something happens that would force the issue. Hope all is well for you and yours.

Hi Ingrid,
There are and have been efforts in this area. It has been somewhat under the radar of most, however. Several colleges and universities now offer studies and degree programs in the martial arts. They are unfortunately very few. This may be a good example of which way one view things. Either from the stand point of the glass being half full or half empty. I believe it is a start for the good though. When you consider the majority of Americans involved in the martials arts (kararte) here do so along the lines of the sport side and competition. Those who are involved in serious study and training are those who are less seen and less written about. This stands in stark contrast with the attitude and mode of thought and training in Europe. Would that America mirrored more its brothers and sisters in Europe.
Regards

Hi Ingrid,
In the arena of scientific research studies have been done to determine what sorts of exercises and stimulations promote improvements in strength, speed, and endurance. I don't recall where one would go to find such info, but I know it has been preformed. Bill Wallace, when working on his masters was involved in some it back in the middle 70s.
Here in the US we also lack good instructors who know how to give students a balance in their studies. We do have the schools that focus on nothing but competition, and others who only train in self-defense. The problem of arrogance is also very previlent here. I wish I had a dime for every idiot who calls him or herself "Master" or "GrandMaster." There is also the delusion amoung many that they teach the only true system of martial arts. Or there system or style is the best. The dilemma for people looking for legitimate honest instructors is a real challenge.
Hope you have a great vacation. Regards to all.
